Storage II – Different types of humidor

The second part of our feature on humidors deals with the different types available according to size.

Minis
Only able to store a few cigars. Because of their size, the lid is not too heavy, and they are no worse than larger humidors. However, it is difficult to maintain a balanced humidity and temperature. Recommended for home usage because of the low price.

Medium-sized humidors
Able to store between 30 and 40 cigars. Can close properly and provide consistent temperature and humidity for cigars. The main drawback is that they are dependent on their environment, and hence sensitive to larger variations in temperature. For example, in winter indoor heating causes the air to become drier, and so the humidity should be set accordingly.

Humidor cabinets
Popular in commerce and catering due to their high price. Can be found in cigar shops and restaurants. They can store a far greater number of cigars than table-humidors. Since they have more parts and shelves, it is easy to separate cigars and avoid contamination. Depending on the size, cigars can also be stored in separate boxes.

Humidor rooms
Used almost exclusively in commerce. A climatizer and hygrometer inside maintain a constant humidity and temperature. The cigars are mostly stored in boxes, with the lids being left open to display their contents.

Other storing possibilities

Travel humidors
Travel humidors differ from standard ones in that the exterior is typically made of leather or textile (rather than wood), and they close with a snap-fastener. The drawbacks are that the humidification is not so good, and if it is not full, cigars can be damaged by shaking during the journey.

Home made humidors
Cigar boxes can be used as temporary humidors. Some are sold in cedar cases which keep humidity and temperature well. Others, like Pleiades boxes, have an integrated humidif. None of them can be compared to real humidors, but they are good enough for temporary usage. The drawbacks are that they do not close properly, lack exterior overlay and keep humidity poorly.

Bags
The plastic bags given in cigar shops can also be used for temporary storage. Although most are designed for carrying cigars home from the store, there are bags with double-press closing for longer term storage.

Humidors in cars
Some cars in the luxury category have built in humidors. While the humidity and temperature are difficult to maintain, they do make nice extras in expensive and classy cars like Rolls Royces.
